Junior Development is our young athletes' stepping stone to the Competitive Program!

Dive into the excitement every Sunday from 4:30-6:00 pm, spanning September 24th to December 17th. Our Junior Development Program is designed to introduce the thrilling world of water polo to budding aquatic enthusiasts.

Skill Development In the Deep Pool
While swimming ability is an asset, our classes are conducted in a shallow pool environment to facilitate skill development. Special emphasis is placed on perfecting essential water polo techniques, including the eggbeater, stop and go maneuvers, quick turns, shooting techniques, and game strategy.
Prerequisites
To enroll, participants should be confident swimming and treading in the deep pool
Scaling Down the Game
Scaling down the game for our young athletes, Junior Development provides a comprehensive introduction to water polo. Participants engage in a blend of competitive swimming, water polo-specific strokes, and PowerswimmingTM techniques.
Unique Skills Development
Children in Junior Development learn the art of swimming with the ball; "dribble" in deep water. This is called the "head-up freestyle" technique—a fundamental stroke in water polo. The program also covers ball handling and shooting in deep water with the "eggbeater" treading technique.
Scrimmage Component
Each class incorporates a match/scrimmage component, fostering teamwork and allowing participants to apply their newfound skills in a game-like setting.
Continuous Registration
Junior Development is a Partnership Program run directly through Saanich Commonwealth Place (SCP). Registration for Junior Development is ongoing through RecOnline. Secure your child's spot in this exciting program that lays the foundation for a future in water polo.
Commonwealth Place Legacy
Commonwealth Place has been the starting point for many water polo stars, including those who began their careers with Minipolo. Our sessions are conducted by nationally certified Saanich Water Polo School coaches, ensuring a high standard of instruction.
