Water Polo offers a unique sporting experience with exceptional opportunities. As an Olympic sport, Canada ranks among the top ten teams globally. Numerous colleges and universities provide water polo scholarships, and SWPS athletes have excelled on National and Provincial teams, preparing them for collegiate competition in the US.
In addition to fostering superb swimming skills, Water Polo prepares athletes for lifeguarding roles, as their power swimming and treading abilities make them highly sought after by beaches and pools. Water polo players are renowned for being the best-conditioned athletes, engaging in both dry land strength training and power swimming during practices. Unlike some mass participation sports, every athlete is actively involved throughout the entirety of each practice.
Most importantly, Water Polo is a fun and enriching experience. Your child will not only become an outstanding swimmer and well-conditioned athlete but will also build lasting connections with teammates, sharing the journey of practices, travels, and sportsmanship.
For children between the ages of 5 and 12, we recommend starting with Minipolo or Junior Development classes at Commonwealth Place on Sundays from 5 pm to 6:30 pm. These classes focus on teaching basic water polo skills and power swimming in shallow or deep water, depending on age and ability. Check the Saanich Active Living Guide or contact Saanich Commonwealth Place for information on upcoming Minipolo and Junior Development sessions. Registration can be done here.
Absolutely! In water polo and Powerswimming, children learn all competitive swimming strokes—freestyle, breaststroke, butterfly, and backstroke—plus additional water polo-specific strokes. SWPS uses its proprietary Powerswimming (TM) system, teaching kids a unique set of skills that contribute to supreme water safety. Children learn to tread water for extended periods, execute quick changes in direction, and develop awareness in an aquatic environment. These skills not only set them apart but also provide confidence for lifeguarding opportunities, with even the US Navy Seals recognizing the strength and preparation of water polo training.
Competitive age groups in water polo are as follows:
Tadpole: U8
Grommet: U10
Atom: U12
Bantam: U14
Cadet: U16
Youth: U19
Gender-specific competition begins at the U14 level.
Water polo offers numerous benefits beyond the immediate sporting experience. Players develop discipline, teamwork, and time management skills. The physical conditioning and mental resilience acquired through water polo can positively impact academic and personal growth. Additionally, being part of a close-knit team fosters lasting friendships and a sense of community.
Water polo practices and power swimming training can begin as early as age 5-6. Competitive water polo games typically start between ages 7 and 11, depending on the child's age, aptitude, and swimming ability. SWPS offers programs like Minipolo and Powerswimming practices for children as young as 5, emphasizing the importance of being active, fit, and comfortable in the water. To determine the most suitable program for your child, contact us for a try-out practice where we can assess their abilities and provide personalized recommendations.
While a competitive swimming background can be beneficial, it is not a requirement. Water polo players need various skills, and competitive swimming or sprinting is just one component. SWPS incorporates competitive swimming instruction, known as Power Swimming, into its curriculum. Through Power Swimming practices, water polo players develop exceptional sprinting abilities, often ranking among the top sprinters in collegiate swimming. SWPS emphasizes a dual-track program, ensuring athletes excel in both water polo and sprinting.
The most crucial skill in water polo is supreme comfort in the water. While swimming is essential, the ability to stay above the water vertically using the "eggbeater" leg skill is vital. Water polo combines elements of soccer and basketball played in the water, emphasizing scoring goals on offense and preventing them on defense. Minipolo introduces these skills in a shallow water environment, making it easier and more enjoyable for young players. Simultaneously, Powerswimming programs equip them with essential skills for deeper water play. SWPS ensures that children have fun, learn valuable skills, and establish a routine of physical exercise and camaraderie through water polo.
Absolutely! Parents play a crucial role in supporting the water polo community. We welcome parent volunteers for various roles, including team coordination, event planning, and assistance during games and tournaments. Engaging with the water polo community is a fantastic way to connect with other parents and contribute to the success of the team.
