Saanich Water Polo School - High School, Elementary & Middle School Leagues

High School Water Polo Team Program
Wednesdays 7:30pm-8:45pm
Commonwealth Place Pool

What is water polo?
Water Polo is an Olympic team sport, played in deep water. There are 7 players in the water at one time including the goalie, and 5 -6 players subbing from the bench. Teams advance the ball by swimming with it or throwing it. Field players can only pick up the ball, catch, shoot with one hand, while the goalie is the only player who is permitted to touch the ball with two hands at the same time. Goals are scored on a floating net. We will be teaching you the rules as we get into our season, and you can find detailed water polo rules on the SWPS Web site.

What do you need to play?
All equipment, balls, caps, nets will be supplied by Saanich Water Polo School. All you need is a bathing suit (goggles are not necessary and in fact not permitted during the actual game – but they can be used for warm ups). Speedo or any other type of competitive bathing suit is not a requirement but definitely an option. It is our recommendation that girls wear a one piece bathing suit.
Required Skills:
Any high school student with a desire and sufficient swimming skills (background in aquatics is a definite asset) can learn to play water polo. In fact the talent base in California (where water polo is extremely popular) is comprised of players like you who started their careers in High School. You will find the workouts challenging and it may take a few practices to work up stamina to truly “enjoy” the game. Members of the Rowing, Track, Basketball, Volleyball, Soccer, Lacrosse, Field Hockey, Fastball and Rugby teams will find water polo an excellent way to keep in shape and gain extra endurance.
Saanich Water Polo School - Commonwealth Place Pool:
Practices for all high schools south of and including the city of Duncan, will be held by the NCCP certified coaching staff of Saanich Water Polo School. ALL interested Phy- Ed teachers are welcome and encouraged to watch, help coach and even get into the water.
Talent Identification:
Players wishing to take the game to the next level will be given an opportunity to join our competitive teams. In fact the High School season is an excellent opportunity for talent identification and for students to see if the game of water polo may be a sport they want to pursue at a High Performance level. If you are serious about the sport, and have the necessary conditioning and swimming skills, you will have a chance to work your way up to collegiate/national level.
The Season:
The High School Water Polo Season is February through April, ending with the BC High School Championships. Practices will be held at Commonwealth Place Pool. Teams are co-ed at the Recreational High School level. Students are encouraged to sign up for water polo regardless of whether or not their school can register a full team, because in the event a school does not have enough players, teams will be combined.
Try Outs Practices and Games:
Standard practice night for water polo will be Wednesdays at Commonwealth Place, from 7:30-8:45. There will be a 15 minute on deck warm up stretching before we get in. Novice players will be taught egg beater, head up free style dribbling, scoring techniques, game strategy and rules. Except for the March break, practices will run:

7:30pm-8:45pm Every Wednesday night from February 1st to April 25th

Try outs will be held Wednesdays in January as follows: January 11, 18 and 25 – 7:30-8:30pm.
You may sign up without a try out, but if you are concerned about having the sufficient amount of stamina, endurance, please feel free and come down on any of these dates, and ask for Coach Denton Grose or Coach Ferenc Vindisch.
Individual Sign Up Procedure and Cost:
Click here to register online. Bring a cheque made out to SWPS to your first practice in the amount of $25.00. Hard copy of sign up sheets will be available on pool deck as well, so you can sign up in person at any of the try outs or practices.
